Kappaphycus alvarezii, also previously known as Eucheuma cottonii, is a commercially valuable tropical rhodophyte that is highly desired for its cell wall polysaccharide, specifically, the carrageenan, making it the world’s most crucial carrageenophyte ( Muñoz et al., 2004 Bindu and Levine, 2011 Lim et al., 2017). Seaweed cultivation aquaculture produces most of the world’s carrageenan, with Eucheuma and Kappaphycus species contributing to over 90% of total carrageenan production ( Campbell and Hotchkiss, 2017). alvarezii carrageenan in terms of metabolic and physicochemical structure, extraction methods and factors affecting production yield, as well as current and future applications.Ĭarrageenan is a high molecular weight sulfated polysaccharide found in the cell wall of red seaweed, which accounts for a large portion of the marine algal compound market and is used in various industries including food and pharmaceutical ( Necas and Bartosikova, 2013 Heriyanto et al., 2018 Guedes et al., 2019 Jönsson et al., 2020). alvarezii has recently received a lot of attention due to its economic potential in a wide range of applications. Kappaphycus alvarezii is the most common kappa-carrageenan source, and it is primarily farmed in Asian countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia. There are three major types of carrageenan found in red algae: kappa ( κ)-, iota ( ι)-, and lambda ( λ)-carrageenan. Carrageenan is primarily produced through aquaculture-based seaweed farming, with Eucheuma and Kappaphycus species accounting for more than 90% of global output. 3Seaweed Research Unit, Faculty of Science and Natural Resources, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Kota Kinabalu, MalaysiaĬarrageenan is a polysaccharide derived from red algae (seaweed) with enormous economic potential in a wide range of industries, including pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, printing, and textiles.2Innovation Center, Xiamen University Malaysia, Sunsuria, Malaysia.1Biotechnology Research Institute, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.Rennielyn Rupert 1 Kenneth Francis Rodrigues 1 Vun Yee Thien 2 Wilson Thau Lym Yong 1,3 *
